Two Deer in the Snow

Snow filtered down in the dimming light of evening

The flakes seesawing back and forth as they float down in the still air

The white flakes settled in the meadow and piled in light fluffy layers on the grass.

And you laid there on the soft grass as the snow fell about you in a barely audible hiss

You two, curled up tight next to one another, as the soft snow settled around you during the quiet dark of the night

And dawn broke and you stood up, shook the snow from your coats, stepped out of your nests and walked across the meadow to the wood

And I witnessed the two tight green circles of grass flattened by your bodies, those green nests in the snow

And they spoke to me of quiet and comfort, each of you aware of the other as the night passed

And I wonder, were you dreaming of spring?
