The Sun Breaks Through This Morning
Background

This dull winter threatens to carry on into the new year. Walking the dog this morning though there was little cloud and a chance at some sun breaking across from the east. Optimistically I carried along my camera and David Whyte’s definition of Background from his new book Consolations II in my mind. A short excerpt below—
Foreground dominates our lives, it is overestimated in importance and hides greater context from which it has emerged… ….A tree in our real, grounded, physical apprehension of the world is made of light and its absence as much as it is made of wood.
The sun did emerge as we rounded the west side of Pinecone trail and were treated to the following.

The light improved until finally the noisy herald of Canada geese entered the scene.
The morning had emerged cold, frozen, and fine. The wet drip and trickle of yesterday stayed locked away.
And I watched with an eye not to the special, but to the background of the awakening forest.
