Return to Rainy Idaho

Return to Rainy Idaho

We just got back from a long enjoyable roadtrip to visit old friends. We experienced some of the early winter snows across southern Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming on our way to southern Colorado.

When we returned, we found it well into the wet fall season here. Wet leaves in great heaps in the streets. This morning was my first morning walk with Mollie in Pine Street Woods. Here in northern Idaho, we get a second bite of fall with the Larch turning a little later than the deciduous trees. I wrote about them last year.

Mineral Point and Larches
There is a wonderful hike at Mineral Point that overlooks Lake Pend Oreille. The trail starts at a summit and winds through pine, cedar and fir forest before ending on the shore at Green Bay.

This morning, we arrived before sunrise amongst the mist. It is very clear Mollie enjoys being back in her home woods. I brought the Fuji GFX 50s ii and my stalwart 135mm f2.8 Zuiko lens. The light and mist lent a softness to the images as I shot most of the wide open. Some small adjustments in contrast were made in post.

Finally I stopped in the middle of the walk for no reason and looked up to see a deer and her youngster. Despite dropping my hiking poles and unclipping my camera she did not move. Mollie was unaware as she is short enough not to notice in the underbrush. The deer was curious about the noise of Mollie’s tags and stepped closer until her fawn panicked and ran off and mom followed.
