Pine Street Woods Feb 6 2025

Apologies in advance for my recent enthusiasm for the regular small accumulations of dry light snow. It has been a thin winter.
I have had the pleasure the last few days of taking care of my neighbor’s dog Boba. He is a goofy, friendly, and lovable border collie. He is also best friends with Mollie. So again I find myself wandering the woods as a Helium nucleus. Reference below…
Again out with my 500mm f5.6 lens.

There has been enough snow there has been busy grooming of ski tracks. This morning a bus load of kids was noisily assembling with their skis. Normally a ruckus in the woods puts my mood off but the sound of children out communing with nature and the bubbling excitement in their collective voice couldn’t help but make this curmudgeonly old man’s heart a little warmer this cold February morning.
For her part Mollie is both fascinated by collections of raucous children and at the same time unusually wary. She gravitates closer to the sounds of joy and happiness knowing something good must be in store but their numbers and chaos leaves her at some remove, observing them curiously and attentively. Inevitably, we hear ‘Hey mister, I like your dog!” to which I always reply ‘Thank you’ though I have no idea why, as I have nothing to do with why my dog is well liked.
On today’s walk I was extra grateful at the isolation on the trails. I, of course, talk to the dogs. I also spoke to the raven as it chortled deeply high in a fir above me.
I then discovered that I also talk to the trees. I am sure this is something I have done for some time but am only now aware of it. I looked around, saw nobody, and carried on. I don’t imagine I will stop talking to them. I couldn’t be rude to a tree.

Two views of the snow.
